2017 Reba Ferguson Memorial Rookie of the Year Award
~ Kendra Carpenter ~

Kendra Carpenter serves as the principal of Dillon Valley Elementary in Summit School District. She has worked in education for 19 years. She is celebrating her first year as a principal. Thank you, Kendra, for all that you do for Colorado's students!  Join us in celebrating this outstanding principal leader!

How long have you served in your current position, and how long have you worked in education?
This is my first year as a principal, however I have been in education for the last 19 years. I have taught internationally in both The Dominican Republic and Japan and in the state of Colorado. During my time as a teacher served as a classroom teacher, English Language Development teacher and a reading specialist.

WHow do you encourage creative thinking within your organization?
Encouraging creative thinking is one of the most important things we can do as a leader. We want both our students and teachers to try new challenges and know their efforts will be honored, no matter what the results. To show that I value creative thinking, I share my own success and failures with staff, students and parents.

What is one characteristic that you believe every leader should possess?
The ability to connect with people. Through relationships great things can happen. Without that in place, change, growth and learning are hard to accomplish.

What books are you currently reading or have you recently finished?
I am currently reading Lead Like a Pirate by Shelley Burgess and Beth Houf and House of Thieves by Charles Belfoure.
