#ThankAPrincipal - Colleen Owens

Colleen Owens was named the 2016 - 2017 Colorado High School Principal of the Year by the Colorado Association of Secondary School Principals (CASSP) and CASE. She currently serves the community of Green Mountain High School in the Jefferson County School District as their principal. Thank you, Colleen, for all that you do! Join us in celebrating this incredible principal leader! #ThankAPrincipal

How long have you served in your current position? In education?
I have been the principal of Green Mountain High School for five years. I have worked in education for 16 years.

What is your favorite destination in Colorado?
When I turned 50, I bought a mountain bike and climbed my first 14er! I love biking around the Green Mountain area and in the mountain towns of Colorado. I also started golfing again (after a 20 year hiatus) with my husband, and we are looking forward to golfing as many courses as we can, while we still can!

What is your proudest moment or accomplishment as a school leader
I am very proud that we brought an agriculture program to GMHS (a suburb of the Denver Metro Area) this year. Students are flocking to agriculture courses, completing Supervised Agriculture Experiences, and have started a Future Farmers of America (FFA), featuring leadership and entrepreneurship. It has been amazing to watch our students and community engage in the agriculture program. Multiple industry partners are now working with us, and the sky is the limit for student and school opportunities.

What do you see for the future of Colorado public education given the promising work and initiatives now underway?
GMHS has a built an Academy Program with four Academies and 14 Pathways that are aligned to college majors and career fields. I believe that these types of programs are the future of education with opportunities for students to demonstrate college and career readiness through internships, capstone projects, inquiry and real-world learning. The Academy Program provides flexible opportunities to explore multiple interests, apply learning in a high school setting, and reflect on where educational choices can lead students.
