2017 CAESP Betsy Dumph Memorial Advocacy Award

~ Hayden Camp ~

Hayden Camp is a current director on the board of the Colorado Association of Elementary School Principals and serves as the NAESP Federal Relations Coordinator for that board. He also currently serves the community of Werner Elementary in Poudre School District as their principal. Thank you, Hayden, for all that you do for Colorado's students! Join us in celebrating this incredible principal leader!

How long have you served in your current position, and how long have you worked in education?
I have worked in education for 23 years now, serving as principal at Werner Elementary for the past 11 years.

Where do the great ideas come from in your organization?
The greatest ideas come from our staff. They are the ones that live it out, daily, so they know the nuances that impact the kids the best. My role is to help cultivate new ideas by encouraging them to take risks and look outside the box.

What is one characteristic that you believe every leader should possess?
Being able to relate to others. It all starts with relationships and building trust. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

What advice would you give someone going into a leadership position for the first time?
Take time to listen, build relationships, and to build trust. Stay true to your values and remember your purpose and whom you serve.

This award is chosen by the CAESP department in spring 2018. To find out how to nominate a principal leader or how to get involved more with this department contact
