2017 CASSA Colbert Cushing Award

~ Walt Cooper ~

Walt Cooper serves as the superintendent of Cheyenne Mountain 12. Thank you, Walt , for all that you do for Colorado's students! Join us in celebrating this outstanding principal leader!

How long have you served in your current position, and how long have you worked in education?
I am beginning my 34th year in public education, and I’ve been superintendent in the Cheyenne Mountain School District since 2006.

Where do the great ideas come from in your organization?
The best ideas for Cheyenne Mountain almost always rise from groupthink and conversations among our district’s leadership team. We’re able to put really talented and committed people around the table, and good things come of that.

What advice would you give someone going into a leadership position for the first time?
Don’t be afraid to recognize and admit what you don’t know, and don’t be afraid to ask for guidance from someone who has been there. Any of us who have had any measure of success or longevity as leaders have had great mentors, peers, and colleagues. No one can do this in a vacuum.

What is your favorite destination in Colorado?
Anywhere that can best be seen from the seat of a bicycle or golf cart.

This award will be chosen by the board of CASSA in spring 2018. To learn more about getting involved with this department, contact
