2017 CALET Outstanding Friend of Technology Award
~ Tim Miles ~

Tim Miles served as the president of the Colorado Association of Leaders in Educational Technology (CALET), one of CASE's seven departments, for the 2016-2017 year. He is also currently serving the community of Steamboat Springs RE-2 as their Director of Technology. Thank you, Tim, for all that you do for Colorado's students! Join us in celebrating this outstanding school technology leader!

How long have you served in your current position, and how long have you worked in
I have been in my current position 11 years and in Education for 15 years.

What advice would you give someone going into a leadership position for the first time?
I would ask them to remind themselves often why they are here and who are their customers. When negotiating contracts, understand vendors and public school districts do not have the same business model. However, we both need each other so early on decide are you needing a vendor or a partner. They are quite different.

What is one characteristic that you believe every leader should possess?
Recognition that every employee processes a piece to the business puzzle. A great leader values and helps educate all on their piece of the puzzle. Good employees make a good sustainable company. Each department understands their role to the overall product.

Who has had a major impact on you as a leader, and why?
Larry Juldeson, one of my first boss’s in NYC. He never hesitated to give you his full attention and help answer your question or solve your issue. “… if you did not succeed neither him nor the department did.”. He was never too busy…regardless how busy he was. He did hold (very rarely) conversations where he talked and you all listened … he wanted and encouraged you to know what he knew and more. He always commanded respect and received it based on how he treated and guided.

This award will be selected by the CALET board in spring 2018. To learn more about getting involved with this department, contact
