Littleton School District Leader named Outstanding Assistant Principal of the Year for Colorado

Englewood, Februrary 23, 2017 – Heidi Wagner, Assistant Principal of Eugene Field Elementary School in Littleton School District, has been named the 2017 Outstanding Assistant Principal of the Year for Colorado by the Colorado Association of School Executives (CASE) and a committee of her peers from the Colorado Association of Elementary School Principals (CAESP).

Upon being notified of this honor, Wagner said, “It is such an honor to have been selected as the Colorado Assistant Principal of the year for the elementary level. I attribute my success to the kids, families, colleagues, and community members I work with each and every day! My interactions with others inspire me to continue learning and become a better person, educator, and leader.”

Wagner’s career as an educator began when she served as a classroom teacher at Meeker Elementary School in Weld County School District 6 nearly 16 years ago. Since then she has served the varying and diverse communities of Crawford Elementary School in Aurora Public Schools, and currently in Littleton Public Schools. She credits all of these roles, from teaching and instructional coaching to facilitating and leading as an assistant principal, and the peers she met along the way to much of her success as a leader.

Wagner has served in her current role as assistant principal of Eugene Field Elementary School for three years. During this time, Wagner has paved the way in strengthening and improving family engagement, founding the widely successful “family Engagement” team and Comprehensive School Climate Survey, both of which helped to build bridges with all in the diverse community of Eugene Field. The K-5 school community is made up of 331 students, with over 84 percent receiving free or reduced-priced meals. 40 percent of these students speak a language other than English at home.

In addition to her work in increasing the overall satisfaction of students and families, Wagner has worked tirelessly to develop and enhance the trusting professional relationship with and among all staff members.

She writes, “Schools where children thrive and succeed are schools where educators feel valued, trusted, empowered, and educated…Hiring is another key component of school leadership, [and] I am proud to say that we have a staff that I trust and empower.”

Investing in people, through her assistance in hiring and maintaining staff, is one of Wagner’s best practices. It is clear through the testimonies of the principal, staff, and students of Eugene Field, that her imprint on the community is widely felt.

“As I began working with her, I was immediately impressed with Ms. Wagner’s strong command of instruction and her ability to identify and prioritize which practices would have the greatest impact on students,” said Eugene Field Principal, Lyn Baja. She continued, saying, “The coordinated effort to nurture the whole child, and the collaborative staff culture that made it possible, has developed at Field in large part because of the work that Ms. Wagner has quietly led behind the scenes.”

Wagner was selected for this honor by her peers through a rigorous and competitive process facilitated by the Colorado Association of Elementary School Principals (CAESP), a department of CASE and affiliate of the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). The Outstanding Assistant Principal of the Year program is sponsored by CAESP, CASE, and McGraw Hill Education.

CAESP Director-at-Large, Hayden Camp, principal of Werner Elementary School and one of the members of the committee that elected Wagner for this award said, “We feel that [Wagner] will make a great choice for the Colorado Outstanding Assistant Principal Award…she builds amazing relationships with students, staff, parents, and community members…and is one of the most phenomenal instructional leaders [her principal] has ever seen.”

CASE and CAESP are proud to recognize the exceptional leadership, like that of Wagner, of those responsible for the day-to-day operations of PreK-8 schools. By recognizing the efforts of Wagner and other leaders in education, the award instills pride in their accomplishments and reinforces their leadership in helping children develop a lifelong love of learning.

CASE and CAESP will formally present Wagner with her award Friday, February 24, 2017 at a school event. She and other CASE award winners also will be recognized at an awards ceremony this spring, as well as at the 48th Annual CASE Education Leadership Convention this summer in Breckenridge.
