DISCOVERâ CARD TRIBUTE AWARDâ SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM TO AWARD NEARLY $1,500,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS TO HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS NATIONWIDE

Colorado Area High School Juniors Win Scholarships

Riverwoods, Ill. – May 23, 2003 – Discoverâ Card is awarding nearly $1.5 million in scholarships to high school juniors as part of the Discover Card Tribute Awardâ Scholarship program.  This year marks the 12th year of the Tribute Awards program.

Since its inception in 1991, the Discover Card Tribute Award program has awarded more than $9.9 million in scholarships to over 4,500 students nationwide.  Given in cooperation with the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), scholarships are awarded to high school juniors who have demonstrated excellence in many areas of their lives – not just academics.

This year, winners were selected from a pool of over 8,000 applicants.  While students must maintain a minimum 2.75 cumulative grade point average to qualify, they must also demonstrate accomplishments in three of four areas: special talents, leadership, obstacles overcome, and community service.

The $2,500 state scholarship recipients in Colorado are:

"The Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship program has been recognizing excellence in high school juniors for more than a decade," said David Nelms, President, Discover Financial Services, Inc.  "By investing in the continuing education of these fine students, we will help them realize their dreams of becoming tomorrow’s leaders."

Once the student graduates high school, scholarship funds may be applied to various education or training programs such as any certification or licensing in a trade, a two year technical degree, an associates’ degree or a four year degree at a college or university in any field of study.

“The Tribute Award scholarships gives the dreamers of our future an opportunity to reach for their stars and honors the accomplishments they’ve already achieved in their young lives,” said AASA Executive Director, Paul D. Houston.  “AASA is proud of our 12 year partnership with Discover Card that helps all around achievers connect with their dreams.”

The winners in each state go on to compete for nine national scholarships each worth $25,000.  The national Tribute Award winners will be honored in June at a ceremony at Discover Financial Services’ headquarters in Riverwoods, Illinois.

The Colorado Association of School Executives coordinated the state panel of judges who based winner selection on information from application materials submitted by each student.  The judges represent Colorado’s communities as well as the state’s education and business sectors.

The American Association of School Administrators (AASA) is the advocacy and professional organization for educational leaders in the United States and throughout the world.  Founded in 1865, AASA’s 15,000 members include superintendents, school system central office administrators, professors and graduate students in schools of education and administrators from other local, regional, state and national education agencies.
