In this high-stakes public education environment of testing, accountability, and funding struggles, we sometimes lose sight of the core meaning and significance of the work that we do. Every day in classrooms and school districts across the state, remarkable work is happening that is making a positive difference in the lives of students.

Join us for the opening CASE Convention keynote as StoryCorps founder Dave Isay shares why storytelling is so powerful, and such a needed practice in our school communities. He’ll detail the origin and mission of StoryCorps and help promote a deeper understanding of why sharing our individual experiences helps create a deeper connection to not only the daily work that we do, but also to our colleagues and the students, families, and staff with whom we work.

Dave Isay is one of the most trusted and respected broadcasters working today. The recipient of four Peabody Awards, a MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship and the $1 Million TED prize, his work taps into the heart and soul of the human experience. He is the founder of StoryCorps, a documentarian and an author of numerous New York Times bestsellers, including Listening is an Act of Love and Callings: The Purpose and Passion of Work.

Noelle Ellerson focuses on leveraging the voice of school administrators in all aspects of federal education policy though member networks, outreach, policy analysis and involvement in the legislative process. She will share her work involving research and analysis supporting AASA’s advocacy work for public education as well as representing AASA advocacy priorities on Capitol Hill.

Noelle Ellerson is Associate Executive Director, Policy & Advocacy for AASA, the School Superintendent Association.

Valley Settlement Project
Engaging the Community for Student Success

The Valley Settlement Project is a dual-generation program focused on school readiness, school achievement, economic stability and community engagement for local families. The project works to support and empower low-income families who are not successfully settled or attached to the community they live in, utilizing community organizing and partnerships with schools, local non-profits and government agencies.

This session will share the successful outreach of the Valley Settlement Project, highlighting El Busicito: a mobile preschool with a parent-volunteer program where parents are trained to spend 10 hours a week in their child's classroom. Additional home visits and outreach help immigrant families build comfort around local schools and increase awareness about their child's education -- developing engaged parents and strong community members.

A Road Less Traveled: Unleashing Student and Teacher Potential

Teacher stress. Student disengagement. Leadership turnover. Flat achievement. All of these appear to be symptoms of a top-down approach to education reform we’ve experienced for the past decade or more. ESSA promises to give districts and states greater latitude to pursue more productive approaches to continuous improvement. Yet with that also comes the concern that without sanctions, we may lose our sense of urgency and focus on helping all students succeed. So how can we make the most of this new opportunity to create a better future for our students?

The key lies in leaders understanding when and how to shift from an “outside-in” approach that foists changes onto teachers, to an “inside-out” approach that taps teachers’ intrinsic motivation to get better every day at helping students learn. Learn how suburban and urban systems in the U.S. and Australia have achieved success by getting clarity and consistency in a few key areas and ultimately, pivoting to an “inside-out” approach to reform that develops teachers’ expertise to help one another build on their strengths and unleash a powerful driver of success: student curiosity.

About Bryan Goodwin
Bryan joined McREL International, a Denver-based nonprofit research and development organization, in 1998 and became its President and CEO in 2014. He has authored four books, including Balanced Leadership for Powerful Learning: Tools for Achieving Success in Your School (ASCD, 2015), The 12 Touchstones of Good Teaching: A Checklist for Staying Focused Every Day (ASCD, 2013), Simply Better: Doing What Matters Most to Change the Odds for Student Success (ASCD, 2011) and The Future of Schooling: Educating America in 2020 (Solution Tree, 2011). He also writes a monthly research column for ASCD’s Educational Leadership magazine. Through his writing, speaking engagements, and consulting work, he helps school systems use research to solve complex problems. Prior to joining McREL, he was a high school teacher in the U.S. Virgin Islands, a college instructor, and business journalist in Pennsylvania. He holds a B.A. from Baylor University and M.A. from the University of Virginia.

Understanding Social and Emotional Development of Young Students Through an Equity Lens

All kids are subject to stress, and for young students, that stress can often manifest itself as challenging behavior. Difficult conduct like this has been identified as a significant barrier to teaching and learning by teachers in the early grades, and research indicates that when a student is suspended or expelled as a consequence, negative academic and life outcomes can be an associated outcome.

These negative outcomes can be avoided. A foundation of academic success is the positive social and emotional development of children in their youngest years, which helps support positive peer interactions and social skills. Administrators with a deep understanding of early social/emotional development are better prepared to interact with students demonstrating challenging behaviors as well as to support teachers in effectively implementing child-centered teaching practices and positive behavior supports in their classrooms that promote self-regulation and positive interactions while preventing the need for exclusionary discipline.

In this session, national experts will provide participants with a research-based grounding in this topic and share practical strategies that can be implemented in classrooms and schools, that will yield a more positive outcome for students with especially challenging behaviors.

State Level Perspective: Conversation with CDE

Join Interim Commissioner Dr. Katy Anthes and top-level CDE staff to hear the state perspective on current education issues, challenges, and opportunities. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions in this interactive, ticketed luncheon.

Upon being appointed interim Commissioner of Education on May 20, 2016, Dr. Katy Anthes became Colorado's first female commissioner in 65 years, preceded only by the state's inaugural commissioner Nettie S. Freed in 1950-51. Dr. Anthes has been with CDE since 2011, serving as Chief of Staff, interim Commissioner for Achievement and Strategy and Executive Director of Educator Effectiveness. In that role, she led CDE’s efforts to evaluate, support and retain highly effective educators in Colorado. In addition, Dr. Anthes was responsible for ensuring the successful implementation of the state’s educator evaluation and development system, pursuant to Senate Bill 10-191. In her past position as a partner with the Third Mile Group, Anthes led and researched major education initiatives for state, district and national organizations on a variety of education issues and projects including; the Colorado School Leadership Academy Board, the Expanded Learning Opportunities Commission and as an evaluator for several district education programs across the state.

The Pleasures and Pitfalls of 41 Years in Education

In this presentation, past CASE President and retiring Roaring Fork School District superintendent Diana Sirko will share the valuable lessons she has learned during her 41 years as an educator, 28 of those as an administrator. She’ll offer insights that she wished she had known earlier in her administrator career, and highlight what she believes we need to be thinking about and planning for in this continually-changing education environment.

Around the country, district leaders are diligently working to determine best practices in improving and supporting principal performance. This session is designed to help create understanding about what central office leaders need to know and do in order to develop and improve the performance of principals as instructional leaders. Join us as we discuss effective application of the current research and best practices for assessing, analyzing and improving support for principals. We’ll help you assess your district and school system’s current framework for principal support and identify strengths to build upon moving forward.

Institute content is based upon the newly released CCSSO Principal Supervisor Professional Standards and UWCEL’s Principal Support Framework.

All of us are impacted by the biases we have about situations and other people, and these biases affect the work that we do as well as our professional relationships. In this session based on research from Ron Heifetz and Carol Dweck, we’ll discuss the origin and implications of bias, and share strategies for developing greater behavioral awareness that helps to promote a more inclusive and healthy organizational culture. You’ll walk away from this shared experience with practical tools that will better enable you to recognize bias and address it to ensure more effective decision-making, stakeholder engagement, and a strong school and district community.

Money Talk: School Funding and Colorado’s Future

The Department of Business Officials is hosting an extended session on school finance and funding opportunities and challenges, providing participants with the opportunity to hear about different tools to understand the funding forecasts and engage communities in the conversation -- a must for the upcoming campaign season! Kicking off the session will be a discussion on possible changes in the state budget that will impact K-12 funding. Next, participants will have the opportunity to hear about different approaches that two districts -- Littleton Public Schools and Boulder Valley School District -- and the Colorado Rural Schools Alliance are using to increase understanding with their stakeholders around school funding. Participants will also have the opportunity to create a goal-setting worksheet and planning framework to use in their communities. Finally, the session will turn toward the fall -- and what communications resources districts can access to support their advocacy efforts around different ballot measures. This not-to-be-missed session will provide ample opportunity for engagement and conversation. Corresponding sessions hosted by the Department of Business Officials include: School Finance Update with CDE, and featuring a representative from Bright Bytes about financial transparency reporting (Wednesday AM); Understanding the BEST Program and the Makeover of the Statewide Facility Assessment Program (Thursday AM); and School Finance 101 for Non-Finance Staff (Thursday PM).
