Superintendents speak at a press conference on their united effort on School Funding. (CASE Winter Leadership Conference, Westminster)

On February 5, 2015, about 100 superintendents held a press conference calling attention to the Colorado Superintendents' Position Statement on School Funding. This statement, signed by 174 of 178 superintendents representing more than 92% of Colorado public school students explained why the school funding conversation is critical to the future of education in Colorado.

Detailed examples of the impact of local cuts on students and the pressing need to restore funding were presented to the media and others in attendance. Superintendents from districts ranging from a student count of 24 to more than 85,000 came together as a demonstration of unified support for action this year.

Students across Colorado are losing out on educational opportunities created by significant cuts, which are still impacting K-12 schools, despite the state’s resurgent economy. The superintendents provided a rationale for restoring one-time and recurring operational resources cut since 2009, in addition to a focus on the hardest hit small rural districts of under 1,000 students and at-risk student populations as determined by poverty.

The 2015 Colorado Superintendent of the Year Brian Ewert from Englewood Schools provided a very powerful message during Thursday's opening general session. His colorful tale of Sailing the Missouri River with his father and brother was not only instructional, but entertaining.

Brian's message came through loud and clear: Vision without skills, knowledge and experience can be dangerous.

Amanda Ripley's keynote address on Thursday sparked ongoing conversations throughout the day and into Friday's sessions.

Amanda's focus on RIGOR came through loud and clear. According to her presentation:

Where Does Rigor Come From?

Delaying Tracking

Focus

Teacher & Principal Training

Coherent Goals

Parental Involvement…at Home

Do you agree and what can you do as a leader? As David Hamilton, Assistant Superintendent of Archuletta County 50 School District, posted in the mobile app, "We need to take what Amanda Ripley discussed and find ways to incorporate it into our practice. Quite often we hear great keynotes and think of things others need to do to change."
