DENVER, CO – The Colorado Association of Superintendents and Senior Administrators (CASSA), a department within the Colorado Association of School Executives (CASE), has awarded Northeast BOCES Executive Director Bret Miles with the 2019 Colbert Cushing Award. The annual award recognizes an individual who has made an outstanding professional contribution and/or provided outstanding service to CASE/CASSA, to a school district, or to education on a national level.
“Being recognized by my fellow CASSA peers is incredibly meaningful,” Miles said. “Every single CASSA member can name five or six other members who are doing something extraordinary right now on behalf of students, educators and their communities. So, when your colleagues take the time to single you out for some recognition, it is quite humbling and the highest honor.”
Miles was nominated by Englewood Schools Superintendent, Wendy Rubin, who said “Bret is a tireless champion for schools! He has been instrumental in numerous initiatives and myriad policy work,” referencing his strong involvement in the Amendment 73 campaign last year.
“He is dedicated to equity and great outcomes for all students in Colorado. There is no person more deserving,” she added.
The award was presented at the 50th Annual CASE Convention during a CASSA Peer Session.
“The Colbert Cushing Award is one of CASE’s highest honors, and reserved for individuals who have truly gone above and beyond their professional expectations,” said CASE Executive Director Lisa Escárcega. “The award’s namesake, Colbert Cushing, was instrumental in developing the CASE that we know today. That means whoever wins the award is an integral part of our association, someone who has actively helped develop our mission and growth. I can’t think of anybody better suited to that than Bret,” she said. “His dedication is clear, and he’s more than deserving of this honor.”
The Colbert Cushing Award is named after CASE’s first Executive Director, Colbert Cushing, who served in the role from 1969 to 1971.
