DENVER, CO – The Colorado Association of School Executives (CASE) presented the 2019 CASEY Award to Colorado Representative Jim Wilson at their recent 50th Annual CASE Convention in Breckenridge. The CASEY Award, one of CASE’s highest and most prestigious honors, recognizes a leader who has made a significant and lasting contribution to public education, who has helped further CASE’s mission and vision, and who has served education at the local, regional, or state level. Representative Wilson was selected as this year’s honoree by CASE’s 24-member governing board, comprised of representatives from the association’s seven sub-departments.
As a former teacher, superintendent, CASE member and CASE president, Representative Wilson has an over 40-year track record of unwavering advocacy for public education. He began his career as a history and government teacher, followed by 21 years as a superintendent in four different rural school districts. He has served in the statehouse since 2013.
“Anyone who doesn’t know Representative Wilson is missing out,” said CASE Executive Director Lisa Escárcega, when presenting him with the award at the 50th Annual CASE Convention in July.
“He is a man of principle, and I’m hard pressed to think of anyone who has made the kind of impact he has, over so many years, and with such singular purpose and passion.”
With the passing of HB 19-1262, which provides state funding for full-day kindergarten, this was an especially important year for Representative Wilson, who has been championing the issue and proposing legislation for it every year since he was elected to the House. As a sponsor for the bill that was finally signed into law this year by Governor Polis—who specifically recognized and thanked Representative Wilson for the role he played in getting the bill passed and keeping the issue at the forefront for so many years—Representative Wilson has not only met, but exceeded, the expectations of the CASEY Award—his impact on Colorado’s students in insurmountable.
