Colorado Association of School Executives
Dr. Colleen O'Neil
CASE Deputy Executive Director
coneil@co-case.org

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dr. Megan Oleson

DENVER, COLORADO (March 3, 2026) — Dr. Megan Oleson, principal of Mesa Elementary School in the Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8, has been selected by the Colorado Association of Elementary School Principals (CAESP) to be the 2026 Colorado Elementary Distinguished Principal of the Year, a recognition honored by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). CAESP is a department of the Colorado Association of School Executives, an organization that supports and advocates for Colorado’s public education administrators.

Oleson has served the Fountain and Fort Carson community for over 15 years as an educator, the last nine of which she has been the Principal of Mesa Elementary. As a transformational instructional leader and educator, Oleson was selected for this award from a highly competitive pool of applicants by CAESP’s board. She has been instrumental in bringing Mesa Elementary to where it is today — connected to family and community, a strong school culture, building teacher leadership, and implementing systems for the whole-child.

Dr. Keith Owen, Superintendent of Schools, Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8, said he has seen Oleson’s impact as a leader firsthand, and over her many years of service he described her as an exceptional leader both for the district and the state.

“Dr. Oleson’s transformational leadership, commitment to developing future leaders, and distinguished service to CASE at state and national levels make her exceptionally qualified for this recognition.”

Since becoming principal of Mesa Elementary, Oleson has led meaningful change at the 660-student K–5 school by fostering a positive school culture, establishing effective behavior management systems, and deepening family and community engagement.

“By consistently opening our doors to families - through showcases, celebrations, and interactive learning experiences - we strengthened partnerships between home and school and reinforced a shared belief that student success is a collective effort,” Oleson said. “This ongoing engagement has deepened family trust, increased participation, and strengthened the sense of pride and belonging within the Mesa community.”

Oleson helped strengthen student engagement and improved consistency in instruction by bringing strong, student-focused science and math curricula to Mesa Elementary. Also, through her implementation of a “staff-run” school framework, teachers rotate through structured Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and have collective ownership of improvements.

“Over my nine years as principal of Mesa Elementary, my work as an instructional leader has been intentionally grounded in building systems, capacity, and coherence across teaching and learning,” Oleson said. “My leadership has focused on ensuring that instructional practices, professional learning, and student supports are aligned to the needs of the whole child while empowering teachers as reflective practitioners.”

Clinton Allison, executive director of student achievement for Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8, said that Oleson’s leadership has had an impact beyond her school through her dedication to the broader community.

“Her unwavering commitment to educational improvement, her ability to create a supportive environment for her staff, and her skill in making tough decisions makes her a shining example of the kind of leader we need in the Colorado educational system,” Allison said. “I believe that her contributions to education at Mesa Elementary are both commendable and deserving of this prestigious recognition.”

Oleson is a notable and dedicated leader within state and national professional organizations. She has served on the CAESP board since 2018, including as President during the 2024–2025 school year, and has been a CASE member since 2015. Since joining NAESP in 2019, she has served on the Professional Learning Advisory Council. Through these roles, Oleson has championed statewide advocacy, shaped professional learning initiatives, mentored aspiring principals, and taught educational leadership courses at the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs.

Above all, Oleson keeps students at the center of her leadership.

“As this work continues, my focus remains steadfast: sustaining systems that build hope, agency, and lifelong skills for the whole child,” Oleson said.

As the 2026 Colorado Elementary Distinguished Principal of the Year, Oleson will be recognized by NAESP as part of the 2026 class of National Distinguished Principals and honored at their award ceremonies in Washington, D.C. in the fall.

- - -

About CASE

The Colorado Association of School Executives (CASE) empowers Colorado’s education leaders through advocacy, professional learning, and networking to advance the promise of public education. Dahl has been with Monterey Elementary since 2020, first serving as an interventionist.

Monterey Elementary School is part of Harrison School District 2, located in Colorado Springs. As the award winner, Dahl will represent Colorado in the class of National Outstanding Assistant Principals.

This award highlights Dahl’s dedication to improving Monterey Elementary, which was in Turnaround status when she joined the team. She implemented a math instructional shift that led to a 50% increase in the average number of students meeting or exceeding grade-level expectations in the classroom.

“One of my proudest accomplishments as Assistant Principal at Monterey has been leading instructional improvement in mathematics,” Dahl said. “When I stepped into the role, our school was still working our way off the block from Turnaround status.”

Under Dahl’s leadership, student chronic absenteeism rates decreased by 3.6% this past year. Dahl said their school’s goal is to reduce it by 10% this year. This was accomplished through building an attendance team, composed of the registrar, a school counselor, a Spanish-speaking paraprofessional, and herself. They built a structured, tiered system to monitor and address student absences.

Dahl believes that attendance has a direct impact on student achievement and connection.

“Research shows that strong relationships and a sense of belonging are key drivers of attendance,” Dahl said. “By fostering these connections and maintaining a data-driven, compassionate approach, we are making a meaningful impact on our school community.”

Dahl has improved leadership distribution, strengthened collaborative decision-making, and enhanced school-community partnerships during her tenure at Monterey Elementary.

Superintendent Dr. Wendy Birhanzel expressed strong support for Dahl, having witnessed her positive impact directly.

“I have had the privilege of working closely with Renee and witnessing firsthand her remarkable leadership, deep commitment to educational equity, and unwavering dedication to students, staff, and families,” Birhanzel said. “Renee has been an integral part of Harrison School District 2 for many years, serving with distinction and loyalty to our community.”

Monterey Principal Erika Tunson echoed Birhanzel’s praise, noting her success in transforming student performance at their school.

“Ms. Dahl has been instrumental in Monterey’s transformational journey from a Turnaround school to one of the highest-performing schools in Harrison School District 2,” Tunson said. “Her collaborative leadership style shines through her strategic planning, team development, and unwavering commitment to student success.”

DENVER — Brentwood Middle School Principal Nicole Petersen has been selected as the 2026 Colorado Middle-Level Principal of the Year.

The Colorado Association of Secondary School Principals (CASSP), a department of the Colorado Association of School Executives (CASE) chose Petersen from a competitive collection of nominees. As the 2026 Colorado Middle-Level Principal of the Year, Petersen will be considered for the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) Principal of the Year award.

Brentwood Middle School in Greeley-Evans School District 6 offers 13 programs and clubs, including the elite International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme. As an IB school, Brentwood is part of an international program founded in 1968 that offers globally recognized academic standards.

"Nicole is an exceptional leader, who has helped create a culture of caring and learning at Brentwood Middle School," said Greeley-Evans School District 6 Superintendent Dr. Deirdre Pilch. "She is devoted to knowing all her students and ensuring they have the support they need to be successful. She supports her staff so they can have the time and resources they need to serve students. The change she has helped lead at Brentwood is remarkable."

When Petersen first started her role at Brentwood, the school was in Priority Improvement status and struggling to make measurable academic gains. Now, they are consistently meeting or exceeding state expectations for growth, Petersen said.

These improvements have not gone unnoticed. Brentwood has been recognized as a School to Watch three times and has received the Colorado Department of Education Center of Excellence award twice. Petersen also received the District Principal of the Year award in 2019.

“We believe our success stems from our commitment to truly knowing our students — not just as data points, but as individuals with talents, dreams, and unique needs,” Petersen said. “While we review trend data to inform our instruction, we remain adamant that every data point represents a human being.”

As part of expanding students' opportunities, becoming an IB school enables Brentwood to cultivate global-minded learners. Over 4,000 schools worldwide participate in the IB program. Achieving IB authorization required extensive teacher and staff preparation, accreditation work, and specialized training.

“At Brentwood, leading learning means preparing students not only to meet academic standards but to live with purpose, passion, and a sense of responsibility to something greater than themselves,” Petersen said. “As an International Baccalaureate (IB) school, we are deeply committed to developing globally minded learners who are skilled thinkers, communicators, and collaborators—but also compassionate humans.”

Andy Hartshorn, assistant principal at Brentwood who has worked with Petersen for over 10 years, applauded her leadership style that has led to the success at their school.

“She empowers teachers to take instructional risks, integrate new strategies, and share successes across teams,” Hartshorn said. “Her leadership cultivates a culture where continuous improvement is valued, and where everyone — students, teachers, and leaders — is committed to learning and growing together.”

Amanda Fanjoy, a parent of a Brentwood Middle School student, said that she has experienced a feeling of inclusion and consideration by Petersen.

“Ms. Petersen has done such an incredible job of making both students and parents alike feel like their feelings and concerns matter,” Fanjoy said. “It feels to me that she constantly has a good pulse on what is happening with all of the students at any given time.”

font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;">Gdowski was selected from a highly competitive pool of candidates by a committee of past award recipients and current superintendents. As the Colorado Superintendent of the Year, Gdowski will represent the state in the National Superintendent of the Year award program offered by the School Superintendents Association (AASA).

Since becoming superintendent in 2009, Gdowski has guided Adams 12 Five Star Schools through a period of sustained improvement, focusing on elevating outcomes for all students with a clear focus on the diverse population of Hispanic and low-income students as well. Under his leadership, the district’s four-year graduation rate for Hispanic students rose from 50.8% in 2010 to 76.8% in 2023, narrowing the gap with white students while raising the graduation rate for all.

Adams 12 Five Star Schools is a diverse, fully accredited district in north Denver serving nearly 35,000 students across 56 schools in five cities and unincorporated Adams County, where over 100 languages are spoken. Under Gdowski’s leadership, the district has made significant investments in facilities and programs through 2016 and 2018 voter-approved measures, expanding career and technical education and dramatically increasing student industry certifications each year.

Lori Goldstein, President of the Adams 12 Board of Education, noted that Gdowski goes above and beyond to support Colorado education both within and outside their district. She has witnessed him lead with humility and integrity, Goldstein wrote in her recommendation letter for Gdowski’s nomination.

“He presents at conferences, contributes to the League of Innovative Schools, and has earned the respect of education leaders across the country,” Goldstein said. “Most importantly, he has dedicated the majority of his professional life to Adams 12, shaping its success and strengthening its community…His vision, humility, and unwavering commitment to students and staff make him not only deserving of this honor in Colorado, but a model of excellence on the national stage.”

Among his most notable initiatives are targeted investments in Title I schools, including the creation of new STEM and International Baccalaureate programs, the Pathways alternative high school, and the Thornton High School Newcomer Center, which supports recent immigrants. Gdowski has also championed innovative educator compensation programs to attract and retain highly effective teachers in schools with the greatest need.

Adams 12 Five Star Schools uses a comprehensive and layered approach to communication, engagement, and feedback to strengthen trust and collaboration across its diverse community. Gdowski emphasizes that no single method works best for all audiences or issues, so the district employs a blend of strategies designed to inform, listen, and respond.

Central to this effort are in-person engagement opportunities, including the Five Star Leadership Academy, Ambassador Program, Parent Leadership Action Network (PLAN), Superintendent’s Student Leadership Council, and La Voz for Spanish-speaking families. These groups foster dialogue, build understanding of district priorities, and equip participants to serve as informed advocates.

Gdowski’s communication philosophy is rooted in transparency, responsiveness, and authenticity. He regularly addresses community concerns raised in public forums, provides factual responses, and takes accountability when mistakes occur. Annual surveys show the district’s communication and engagement efforts consistently exceed national benchmarks, reflecting strong trust and satisfaction among parents, students, and staff.

A proud graduate of Adams 12 Five Star Schools, Chris Gdowski’s roots in the district run deep. He attended Leroy Elementary, Northglenn Junior High, and graduated from Thornton High School in 1985 before earning his summa cum laude degree in political science from the University of Colorado Boulder. His undergraduate honors thesis explored curriculum challenges in Colorado’s public schools, including his own district, foreshadowing the thoughtful, research-informed leadership he brings to education today.

Prior to his role as superintendent, Gdowski was the district's lead outside legal counsel for many years and transitioned in 2006 to the in-house general counsel role.

Gdowski is recognized as a highly respected, community-centered, and student-focused leader.

"This award is a tremendous honor for me and for Adams 12 Five Star Schools,” Gdowski said. “I am grateful to our staff members for their commitment to serving our diverse community and the doors of opportunity that we've opened for our young people.

The Colorado Association of Superintendents and Senior Administrators (CASSA), a department of the Colorado Association of School Executives, recognized Dr. Wendy Birhanzel, the Superintendent of Harrison School District 2, with the 2025 Colbert Cushing Award.

The CASSA department presents the Colbert Cushing Award to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to CASE. This award commemorates Colbert Cushing, CASE’s first Executive Director, who served from 1969 to 1971.

Birhanzel earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership in Urban School Settings from the University of Southern California and has worked in public education for over 20 years. She has been a strong advocate for public education, fighting for Title I school districts, including Harrison School District 2 (HSD 2), in local and state issues. She is a valuable and vocal member of CASE’s Legislative Advocacy Committee, as well as other subgroups within the organization.

"This recognition is truly a reflection of our entire Harrison School District 2 team,” Birhanzel said. “Our leaders, teachers, and staff come to work every day with one mission: to believe in our students and create opportunities for them to thrive. One person can’t accomplish that alone—it takes a community committed to equity and excellence."

Under Birhanzel’s leadership, HSD 2 has flourished. Serving students from diverse backgrounds, she has overseen the implementation of free programs, including college access, before- and after-school programs, athletics, and other activities, as well as breakfast and lunch programs, technology, and tutoring services. Birhanzel has collaborated with the community to establish a cohesive support system for students and families, including ensuring access to mental health resources.

"There is still so much work ahead to ensure students from less affluent school districts have the same access and opportunities as any other child in Colorado,” Birhanzel said. “Our students are incredibly talented and capable; they simply deserve systems and assessments that measure their skills fairly and open doors to their future."

"Districts like ours often have to work twice as hard to make sure our students not only have opportunities, but that they can fully access them,” Birhanzel added. “That challenge drives us every day—and it makes every success even more meaningful because it represents perseverance, innovation, and belief in what our students can achieve."

Adam Hartman, Superintendent of Cañon City Schools, has worked together as colleagues in education for years. They now serve together on the CASSA board and serve schools in the Pikes Peak region.

“I am so proud to see my colleague, Dr. Wendy Birhanzel, honored with the Colbert Cushing Award,” Hartman said. “Wendy is one of the most inspiring leaders I’ve had the privilege to work alongside, and this recognition is a perfect reflection of her impact on students, staff, and the broader community.”

Dr. Rob Anderson, Superintendent of Boulder Valley School District, worked with Birhanzel on multiple statewide educational initiatives. Most recently, they worked together on the state accountability task force.

"Dr. Wendy Birhanzel has dedicated her career to supporting the most vulnerable students we serve in public schools,” Anderson said. “She has made a lasting difference for public education not just in Harrison School District 2 or here in Colorado, both through her work at the national level at AASA -- the School Superintendents Association. She is an incredible educational leader and advocate for all students and is truly deserving of the 2025 Colbert Cushing Award."

In addition to receiving this award, Birhanzel has had a series of honors and recognitions for her work supporting the students, families, and staff of HSD 2 over the years. She also holds the honors of 2025 AASA Woman Superintendent of the Year and CASE’s 2023 Colorado Superintendent of the Year.

She has been recognized for her accomplishments by many, including being named one of Southeast Express’s “22 to Watch in ’22,” a Woman Making a Difference by the League of Women Voters, a DEI Transformational Leader by the Colorado Springs Business Journal, the 2023 Colorado Springs Woman of Distinction by the Girl Scouts, and Solid Rock CDC’s 2023 Distinguished Service Award.

Birhanzel is the CASE president-elect for the 2025-2026 member year. She will serve as CASE president in 2026-2027, and CASE past-president in 2027-2028.

Walker was one of three high school principals selected as a finalist from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity, and the U.S. Department of State Office of Overseas Schools. NASSP includes more than 16,000 school leaders. These applications are reviewed by past state principals of the year, industry leaders and experts, and NASSP staff, according to NASSP’s website.

Walker has served as the principal of East High in Denver for four years and has a total of nine years in public education leadership. Under her leadership, East High has grown to become a center of academic excellence and equitable opportunity.

Known for building meaningful relationships with students, staff, and the community, her approach to leadership has fostered a positive school culture. She has led her school through the most tragic circumstances a community could endure, all the while continuing to see measurable improvements in student performance. Walker has ensured equitable grading practices and targeted academic support, which has reduced failing rates for Students with Disabilities, English Language Learners, and minority students.

“These exceptional finalists’ stories provide a practical blueprint that any school can adapt to improve student engagement, boost academic achievement, and build stronger school communities,” NASSP CEO Ronn Nozoe said. “At NASSP, we’re excited to support these leaders as they help reimagine our education system to meet the diverse needs of today’s students and tomorrow’s challenges.”

“It is with immense joy, deep gratitude, and heartfelt appreciation that I accept this honor as one of the three finalists for the National Principal of the Year award,” Walker said. “I must reiterate, this recognition is a reflection of the incredible students, dedicated staff, and supportive school community who inspire me every day and make this journey possible.”

Under Walker’s leadership, East High’s measurable student achievement has steadily increased. While national trends show SAT math scores declining, East High’s scores rose by eight points through targeted efforts in differentiated instruction and test preparation. Advanced Placement scores improved as well: with a growing student population, the AP pass rate reached 74% in 2024. The graduation rate is an impressive 96.2%, thanks to Walker’s commitment to excellence and supportive systems.

“Principal Walker’s unwavering integrity and courageous spirit have guided her through challenges that few leaders ever face,” Denver Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Alex Marrero said. “Her deep commitment to DPS is nothing short of inspiring, and we are incredibly fortunate to have her at the helm of East H.S. Through her relentless perseverance, she has ushered East into an era of remarkable progress.”

A colleague noted that Walker possesses the ability to identify what truly matters for East High, focusing on the most critical information rather than being swayed by the loudest or most prominent voices.

“ I think for the first time in historic East leadership, we have a leader who recognizes that there are different voices, experiences, and needs in her building,” Yolanda Ortega, Operational Service Director for Denver Public Schools, said. “She realizes it's not the loudest, but it's oftentimes those who are not at the table who need to be heard.”

###
The Colorado Association of School Executives (www.co-case.org) is the preeminent professional association for public school administrators in Colorado. Walker is the principal of Denver East High School, and was selected for this honor by the National Association of Secondary School Principals Selection Committee through a competitive process.

Walker has served as the principal of Denver East High School for four years, with a total of nine years in public education leadership. Throughout her time as a school leader, Walker has transformed the school into a model of inclusivity, academic excellence, and student empowerment. Through intentional leadership and a deep commitment to equity, she has fostered a culture where students and staff thrive emotionally, physically, and academically.

Recognizing that a strong school culture is built on trust and relationships, Walker prioritizes direct engagement with students, staff, parents, and the community. She hosts monthly coffee chats for parents and staff, engages regularly with the school’s 92 affinity groups, and co-hosts Halo Hello events with the East Angels Foundation. Additionally, her presence at athletic, performing arts and academic events underscores her dedication to celebrating student achievements.

Her approach to leadership is data-driven, and a quarterly time task analysis ensures that 75% of her day is devoted to meeting with stakeholders. This approach creates an environment where every student and staff member feels valued, supported, and heard. One student shared with us their thoughts on Walker’s leadership: “She doesn't just listen to students: she amplifies our voices, giving us the confidence to lead, challenge norms, and push for change. Under her leadership, learning isn't confined to textbooks, it happens in the way we organize, advocate, and create. She empowers students to take ownership of their education and their impact on the world, making our school a space where ideas turn into movements and where every student feels they have the power to shape their future.”<ins cite="mailto:Melissa%20Gibson" datetime="2025-02-25T09:43"></ins>

Under Walker’s leadership, equity at East High is not a static initiative but an ongoing practice embedded in school culture. Each year, the school community unites under a central theme: from “Be A Unicorn,” which celebrates individuality, to “Be A Good Person,” which focuses on healing and community rebuilding after tragic events of gun violence. This year, the emphasis is on “JOY,” reinforcing the importance of finding happiness in learning and personal growth.

Additionally, by ensuring equitable grading practices and targeted academic support, she has helped reduce failing grades among Students with Disabilities, English Language Learners, and minority students.

Denver Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Alex Marrero shared that “Principal Walker’s unwavering integrity and courageous spirit have guided her through challenges that few leaders ever face. Her deep commitment to DPS is nothing short of inspiring, and we are incredibly fortunate to have her at the helm of East H.S. Through her relentless perseverance, she has ushered East into an era of remarkable progress.”

Her leadership has led to measurable improvements in student performance. Notably, East High’s SAT Math scores increased by 8 points, defying the national trend of declining scores. A focus on differentiated instruction and test preparation contributed to this success. Additionally, Advanced Placement (AP) pass rates have risen steadily, reaching 74% in 2024, while participation in AP courses has also increased. A commitment to post-secondary readiness is reflected in the school’s impressive 96.2% graduation rate. By strengthening academic advising, college counseling, and career readiness programs, she ensures students are well-equipped for life beyond high school.

When notified that Walker was selected for this award, she shared “I am deeply honored to receive this recognition, but I must emphasize that greatness at East High School is never achieved alone. This award belongs to the incredible students, dedicated leadership team, committed staff, supportive parents, engaged alumni, district partners, and the greater East community—all of whom pour their passion and energy into making East exceptional. Together, we strive for excellence every day, and together, we celebrate this achievement as a reflection of our shared commitment to student success. Thank you for recognizing our collective efforts!”

Under Walker’s leadership, Denver East High School continues to set a high standard for academic excellence, student well-being, and equitable opportunities. Walker will represent Colorado and be considered for the National Secondary School Principal of the Year Award, along with contenders from all other states. CASE will celebrate Walker and other award honorees in late April at the 2025 CASE Awards Reception.

###

The Colorado Association of School Executives (www.co-case.org) is the preeminent professional association for public school administrators in Colorado.
Academy District 20 leader receives Assistant Principal of the Year Award

Photo provided by Liz Walhof

Academy District 20 Air Academy High School Assistant Principal Liz Walhof was named the 2025 High School Assistant Principal of the Year on November 22, 2024, by the Colorado Association of Secondary School Principals, one of seven departments of the Colorado Association of School Executives.

Walhof has served in her current role for six years and flourished as a leader.

One of the many ways Walhof stands out as a leader is how she values the quality of her relationships with her teachers. She has successfully created a safe and welcoming environment, allowing educators to teach their students even more effectively. In the last two years, Walhof has led the Emergenetics training for the staff at Air Academy. This training aims to help improve the understanding of one another and create insight into what team members might need. It’s resulted in a more cohesive and stronger team with greater awareness about how best to work with one another.

While she also invests in her relationships with teachers, Walhof does the same with students.
"I love that I've invested in students enough to be a trusted adult for them," Walhof said. "Many cross the halls to hug me, ask for advice, or share their fears and celebrations."

"Obviously, any such award is a win for our whole community, so they deserve the credit just as much as me," Walhof said. "I am so grateful to my boss for giving me the autonomy to try new things and for my teams for being willing to take risks and grow in their own practices with me."

Academy District 20 Superintendent Jinger Haberer praised Walhof, recognizing her as an exceptional leader within their district.

"People are the heart of our success in D-20, and Liz exemplifies this mark of excellence in our district," Haberer said. "She goes above and beyond to ensure that every student feels valued and affirmed. She always has a warm embrace of kindness for both staff and students and inspires all to create a culture of care at Air Academy High School."

Each year, Walhof works with her staff to ensure their curriculum helps students use their skills beyond the classroom. For example, Walhof worked with the world language department chair to transition from grammar-based instruction to proficiency-based learning so students would be more likely to be able to utilize languages outside of the classroom.

"I love the work we have done as a school these past few years and am particularly excited about the work of our English intervention center, our CTE Career Academies, and our thriving World Language program," Walhof said. " I hope this award helps the broader education community see the amazing work that is happening here in Colorado - and at Air Academy and Academy District 20 in particular."

This same proficiency-based approach helped credit-deficient students get back on track after COVID-19 interruptions.

"Students regained hundreds of credits in a matter of weeks because the focus shifted from compliance to demonstrations of mastery paired with the small group support to fill in gaps that prevented them from being successful otherwise," Walhof said.

This work is recognized by the community as well, with a parent noting the importance of professional skills being taught in school.

"Liz has done a great job thinking about career pathways which make sense for our comprehensive high school and the limited resources it has," Katie Czukas, a school parent, shared. "Her prototypes for three distinct pathways for our large school district - aviation/aviation repair, entrepreneurship, and arts (technical theater/digital media) speak to recognizing that there is the ability for students with different interests/aptitudes to create a 4-year high school program designed to allow them to have pride in their passions and a high-quality way to be successful as an adult."

Walhof began her educational career in Douglas County School District in 2000, where she worked for 15 years as a Spanish teacher, Education Technology Coach, Professional Development Coordinator, and Director of Educational Innovation. In 2015, Walhof moved to Lewis-Palmer School District #38 where she served as the Director of Technology and Professional Learning until 2018.
She hopes this award can inspire others to see the impact of the assistant principalship.

“The role of the assistant principal is so vital and, candidly, also just so much fun. There are days when I just laugh and think, 'I got paid to do this today!'" Walhof said. "Obviously, it's hard work too, but I hope these types of awards encourage awareness of the role so more educators see it as a wonderful option should they ever wish to leave the classroom."

Dr. Paxton was selected by a committee of her peers through a highly competitive process facilitated by the Colorado Association of Secondary School Principals (CASSP), a department of CASE and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

With over 12 years of experience as an assistant principal, including five years at Mountain Vista Community School, Dr. Paxton has made a profound impact on both her students and staff. By reshaping educational practices to prioritize well-being, equity, and academic success for all of the community, Dr. Paxton has reshaped the school’s culture.

Under Dr. Paxton’s leadership, initiatives like the VIP Program and the Parent Advisory Council have strengthened the bond between families and the school, fostering meaningful partnerships that enhance student achievement. "When parents are actively involved, students thrive," Dr. Paxton shared. By having these groups that meet once per quarter, parents can be directly involved within the school and are better able to support their child’s learning.

Her dedication to celebrating student success is evident through the PBIS Renaissance Program, which recognizes excellence in attendance, academics, and behavior. In the first quarter alone, 30% of students were recognized for their achievements, a testament to the program’s impact. Through consistent classroom visits and schoolwide assemblies, Dr. Paxton reinforces accountability, pride, and the core values that define Mountain Vista’s culture.

Harrison School District 2’s superintendent, Dr. Wendy Birhanzel, shared that, "Dr. Paxton's leadership is a testament to the transformative impact of using data to drive academic success for all students. By strategically implementing systems that support continuous improvement, she has created an environment where every student can reach their full potential. Dr. Paxton has an unwavering commitment to excellence, and I am proud to see her recognized as Colorado's Middle Level Assistant Principal of the Year."

Equity is central to Dr. Paxton’s mission. She works to ensure that each student is valued and supported by introducing restorative practices and hosting events like the Educating Children of Color Conference. Programs such as the UCCS Precollegiate program allow students to engage in advanced coursework, providing them a variety of experiences to envision their future. Based on student feedback, Dr. Paxton introduced 12 new elective courses this last year focused on hands-on learning opportunities that align with students’ career goals. The school principal, Dr. Angela Valdez, shared with us that, “Student data as well as social-emotional development is at the forefront of decisions and systems that Dr. Paxton has made or built within the past 4 years at Mountain Vista. She uses student data to modify/enhance systems to ensure that students in all subcategories receive an equitable education.”

In addition, students and staff alike are encouraged to embrace leadership roles. From restorative justice panels for eighth graders to professional learning communities for teachers, Dr. Paxton fosters a shared sense of ownership and collaboration. Her initiatives extend beyond academics, incorporating social emotional learning and wellness programs that enrich the entire school community. Further preparing students for their future, she uses each person’s strengths to build their capacity in many ways. Her ability to foster innovation and creativity has affected the staff as well, an 8th grade math teacher shared with us, “Teachers met to come up with Constructed Response Rubrics that best matched the state testing standards. Also, teachers were able to collaborate vertically to better understand how each grade level could support each other. Throughout the year, these teachers have continued to meet and collaborate to bring these ideas from the half-day PD to life.” The community that Dr. Paxton has created to better the life of each student can be seen from the dedication she makes through the extension of her staff.

Through her dedication to creativity, equity, and high expectations, Dr. Paxton exemplifies the transformative power of educational leadership. Dr. Pilch was selected by a committee of former award winners and superintendents through a competitive process. She will represent Colorado in the 2025 School Superintendents Association’s National Superintendent of the Year program and is eligible for that award as the state’s honoree.

With nearly four decades’ experience in public education, Dr. Pilch is unflagging in her dedication to ensuring equity and access for all students. Greeley-Evans is the fifteenth largest district in Colorado and serves as a refugee resettlement community with over 60 different languages spoken, and over 70% of students living in poverty.

One of her early accomplishments as superintendent was overhauling Greeley-Evans’ English Language Learner program to address low achievement and growth rates among that student group. Dr. Pilch spearheaded a comprehensive new English Learner Master Plan that offered a strong continuum of services for multilingual learners (ML) and provided in-depth training for teachers to successfully implement these new offerings. The results were powerful: there was an 87 percent increase in the number of ML students enrolled in Advanced Placement courses, a 19 percent increase in the number of ML students identified as Gifted and Talented, and a graduation rate increase of ML students of more than 13 percent. The Greeley-Evans’ graduation rate of this student group now outperforms the state average for the same sub-group.

Another hallmark of Dr. Pilch’s leadership is her skill in bringing together groups of people with disparate views. One of her first acts as a superintendent was to begin repairing the relationship with the educator’s union, when contract negotiations had reached a near impasse. She has worked diligently to build trust in the community and build relationships and partnerships that eventually expanded opportunities for students. Just two years after Dr. Pilch was hired, District 6 passed its first Mill Levy Override for additional operational dollars in 2017. Two years later, voters approved a $395 million Bond Issue, which replaced two buildings, constructed a new K-8 school, funded significant additions at several schools and provided much-need security upgrades and renovations at every District 6 school, including charter schools.

Colleagues praise Dr. Pilch for her value around authentic dialogue and collaboration among groups with differing viewpoints. “Ultimately, we all share the desire that our students receive a strong public education and the support they need to succeed,” she said. “That’s far more powerful than the issues that divide us.”

The Superintendent of the Year selection committee noted that this year’s award process was particularly competitive with a number of outstanding nominees. One of the things that stood out to the committee is Dr. Pilch’s long-standing advocacy not just for her own school district, but for every district in the state. They were impressed by her outspoken championing for public education, and passion for continuing to raise the bar and improve student services and supports.

“Dr. Pilch inspired us with her firm belief in public education as the great equalizer,” said Dr. Greg Rabenhorst, superintendent and chair of the selection committee. “Public education changes the lives of children and the children that follow them. Her passion for students and leadership really showed when she said that her biggest hope for students is to find joy--joy in school, joy in their career path, and joy in life.”

The Greeley-Evans School District echoed their admiration and appreciation for Dr. Pilch. “Dr. Pilch is an extraordinary leader. She has changed the trajectory of our district and in turn, the lives of our students and families,” said Board of Education President Michael Mathews. “We are incredibly grateful to have Dr. Pilch as our superintendent and are very proud that she is being honored as Superintendent of the Year.”

Dr. Pilch stated that the Superintendent of the Year award is an honor for the entire Greeley-Evans community, and well-deserved recognition for every educator in the district. “Our community and educators collectively work so hard to be sure our students receive a strong education, and I’m so proud to lead those efforts. Colorado has truly remarkable K-12 leaders, and to be able to sit among them and hopefully elevate the importance of public education, is truly an honor.”

Dr. Pilch will be recognized by CASE in the upcoming weeks in her district and celebrated as Colorado’s 2025 Superintendent of the Year at the AASA National Conference on Education in March 2025. As the state winner, she will be considered for the 2025 National Superintendent of the Year award.

###

DENVER — The Colorado Association of School Executives (CASE) is pleased to announce that Patrick Schumaker of Academy School District 20 has been named the 2024 Colorado Elementary Distinguished Principal of the Year. This award recognizes an outstanding principal at the elementary and middle levels, and Schumaker was selected as the 2024 honoree by representatives of the Colorado Association of Elementary School Principals (CAESP), one of seven CASE departments. The interview and selection process is rigorous and based on criteria that include leadership accomplishments, evidence of implementing proven best practices, school and student data, and feedback from staff, students, the community, and the nominee’s supervisor.

Schumaker has been the principal of Chinook Trail Elementary School for 13 years and has worked in education since 1998. Under his leadership, Chinook's enrollment more than doubled, from 300 to 640 students. The Annual Character and Climate Survey results boast that 90% of students, staff, and parents have high satisfaction with the school.

The Colorado Department of Education has recognized Chinook with a John Irwin School of Excellence nine times since 2011. Chinook was also recognized by the Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award in 2011, 2012, and 2013. This school is only one of three elementary schools in the state to be a Colorado Model Autism and Significant Support Needs Program (COMASP), which was earned in May 2013 and has been maintained at this status.

With a belief in hiring and supporting teachers who believe all students can achieve, creating a common vision for future goals, and developing systems to celebrate and monitor progress, Schumaker and teacher leaders are supporting their students at all levels.

“It is a privilege to have Patrick Schumaker at the helm of Chinook Trail Elementary School,” Jinger Haberer, Superintendent of Academy District 20, wrote. “His leadership inspires curiosity, kindness, academic achievement and hope for his staff and students. His commitment to excellence and strong parent and community partnerships promotes engaging learning experiences for students and a quality education for all.”

Schumaker is applauded for his abilities as a collaborative leader focused on community building, seen through a robust Parent/Teacher Association and other consistent community involvement. He has also been a part of developing Professional Learning Communities.

“Mr. Schumaker has a remarkable ability to foster a positive culture for both staff and students,” Tacy Killingsworth, Director for Curriculum and Instruction for Academy District, wrote in her recommendation letter. “He consistently celebrates his staff and the work they do and at the same time pushes them to continue to grow in their craft.”

Heather Woodward, Elementary Executive Director of Cherry Creek School District, chaired the selection committee. She shared that the selection committee was very impressed by Schumaker and that he has the “hallmark characteristics of a principal who exudes excitement and engagement,” with humility and authenticity.

“He’s a tremendous colleague and asset to public education,” Woodward said.
According to his peers, Schumaker is an inspiring and motivating leader. The district serves just over 2,700 students, who primarily come from the eastern plains communities of Lochbuie, Hudson and Keenesburg. Dr. Rabenhorst was selected through a competitive process by a committee of previous award winners and current superintendents from both rural and urban school districts across the state.

With more than ten years in his role as Superintendent with Weld Re-3J, Dr. Rabenhorst has intentionally developed and led a district community focused on student achievement, transparency, and a sense of inclusion for all. His background as an administrator in special education, human resources and finance helps inform his strategic vision and provides a deep understanding of how to best address the needs and priorities of the district, in a way that keeps students at the center of the work.

“Dr. Rabenhorst provides exceptional leadership, an unwavering commitment to student success, and a remarkable ability to foster a nurturing and innovative educational environment,” shared Weld Central High School Principal Nicholas Ng. “His commitment to ensuring that students feel heard and valued has not only empowered them to take ownership of their education but has also contributed to a culture of inclusivity and openness within our institution.”

Dr. Rabenhorst speaks of the importance of being present and visible as much as possible in the district’s schools and points to the incredible value of impromptu conversations with students and staff ranging from the custodian to the principal. He says that this approach has helped him gain more insight and information than any formal survey could. Authentically knowing and caring about individuals is critical to building trust, and these informal conversations help ensure that staff know they can approach him at any point and that he cares about what’s on their minds and what ideas they might have.

One of Dr. Rabenhorst’s earliest priorities when he first became an administrator was to decrease the achievement gap between general education students and students with disabilities. This ignited a passion to serve not only students with disabilities, but all students who struggle due to various factors. He continues to prioritize the use of formative and summative data to make decisions regarding achievement and student well-being. Student voice is a critical data element and has been used to create and develop graduation pathways for students. Dr. Rabenhorst and all K-12 staff have collectively worked to improve graduation rates, and the pathways development work is key to giving students voice and choice in their education.

This kind of strong focus on student achievement was recognized by Colorado Governor Jared Polis in March 2023. Hudson Elementary School in Weld Re-3J was one of twelve schools in the state to receive the Governor’s Math Bright Spot because of their growth in student achievement in math from 2019-2022. The school was awarded $50,000 to be put toward continued efforts to improve scores even more.

Another element of Dr. Rabenhorst’s leadership that impressed the award selection committee is his strong focus on distributive leadership and ensuring that every district staff member feels like a valued and integral member of the team.

"Dr. Rabenhorst's emphasis on 'the gift of belonging' as it relates to his staff and students resonated with all of us, highlighting its immense value," said Denille LePlatt, chair of the award selection process and president of CASE's department for superintendents and senior leaders. "In a time marked by division and disconnection, Dr. Rabenhorst's ability to unite his school community around a shared purpose and mission serves as a testament to his outstanding leadership."

Weld Re-3J staff echo this point, enthusiastically talking about the authentic relationships he has built with them and the effort he puts into making and maintaining connections.

Jennifer Forbes, principal of Meadow Ridge Elementary School, shares that Dr. Rabenhorst is tireless in his efforts to support staff and is always the first to celebrate the great things happening in the district’s schools. “He cares about everyone, from the principals, to teachers, to secretaries, to janitors,” said Jennifer. “He loves to be in our schools and talk to everyone who works and learns there and has created a culture that allows everyone to know they are valued.”

The entire Weld Re-3J Board of Education added that “Dr. Rabenhorst is a great collaborator and offers quality leadership among his colleagues and employees to provide complete transparency on where the district stands with regard to future growth and potential needs moving forward.”

When told he was the 2024 recipient of this award, Dr. Rabenhorst expressed, “I am honored to have been selected for this recognition and believe it is a direct reflection of the great work our teachers and staff are doing for students every day. Avery is the principal of North Valley Middle School, and he was selected for this honor by the Colorado Association of Secondary School Principals Selection Committee through a competitive process.

Avery has served as principal of North Valley Middle School for six years and has been in administration for fifteen years. His leadership as principal is described by staff, students and parents alike as supportive, inclusive and genuine, with a clear priority for ensuring that every member of the school community feels valued and important. Avery cites North Valley’s three-pronged system as the guiding framework for how he and his staff approach their work: 1) Treat all students firmly and with love; 2) Provide a consistent, viable standards-based curriculum in every classroom; and 3) Use sound researched-based instructional standards. That framework, illustrative of Avery’s approach to education and leadership alike, has had a very positive impact on the school.

Described fondly by colleagues as a “data guy”, Avery constantly analyzes performance data at the student, classroom and grade level and uses that to create short and long-term goals with accompanying action plans. Teaching and instruction are tailored based on the real-time needs of students, and he regularly reinforces to teachers that they are the experts in their field, which helps bolster their confidence in continually seeking excellence and improvement. Student test scores tell the story of how Avery’s data-driven approach has paid off. Since arriving at North Valley Middle School in the spring of 2017, the overall CMAS scores have consistently risen. For example, in the three years of testing prior to his arrival, North Valley averaged 723.3 on CMAS Math and in the four years since, students have averaged 727.65.

In addition to the numbers, Avery has implemented “Fishbowl”, which consists of activities to facilitate input from students and encourage communication with adults. This allows the students a place to speak freely and share their views on various school topics. Then the roles switch and the students listen to the staff’s perspectives. This practice creates a deep dialogue between the students and staff and ensures that everyone gets a chance to speak without interruptions. Avery inspires the students and staff to work together, communicate effectively and support each other, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation. By empowering and supporting their students and staff, he is not only raising great leaders but also creating a positive and thriving school community.

The school has a diverse population of students and Avery ensures that there is an inclusive culture. A parent of NVMS stated, “NVMS is incredible when it comes to inclusion of all groups and I believe that starts with the principal! He sets a great example for the students and teachers to follow.” The school has set up a Student Council Food Basket program which provides food to low-income families during the holidays. They also have organizations and clubs for the special needs population, LGBTQ+ and Hispanic demographic groups. Avery has created an opportunity for a community for students of all backgrounds.

Superintendent Johan van Nieuwenhuizen proudly stated, “Mr. Avery has a positive influence on the climate and culture of his school, and he demonstrates a collaborative leadership style that promotes a strong learning community. He has high expectations for himself and his staff and puts students first in everything he does.”

When Mark Avery was notified that he was selected as the 2023 Colorado Middle School Principal of the year, he shared with CASE, “A leader is only as strong as the people around him. This award is a reflection on the amazing staff at North Valley Middle School.”

Avery and other award honorees will be recognized this spring at the 2023 CASE Awards Reception.

###

The Colorado Association of School Executives (www.co-case.org) is the preeminent professional association for public school administrators in Colorado. Dr. Page is the principal of Highlands Ranch High School, and he was selected for this honor by the National Association of Secondary School Principal Selection Committee through a competitive process.

Dr. Page has served as the principal of Highlands Ranch High School for eight years, with a total of eleven years in administration. Throughout his time as a school leader, Dr. Page has intentionally cultivated a positive and encouraging environment for both students and staff, in which all members of the school community feel safe raising their ideas and concerns. Chief among his goals as principal has been instilling a culture that encourages staff to dialogue openly about school issues, and to challenge the status quo or proposed solution.

Highlands Ranch High School teachers speak of the open and effective communication that occurs at the school, and district administrator Caitlin Filleman says, “Dr. Page embraces the importance of inclusive, direct stakeholder connections in a safe, supportive environment. [He] is a hands-on leader who positively interacts with people of all ages and backgrounds and listens to leaders in a collaborative manner.”

Further illustrative of his value for working together to create a positive school community is Dr. Page’s rollout of a new tagline for Highlands Ranch High School. He introduced the phrase “ALL IN” as a call to action for students to take pride in their school and learning and to invest in their fellow classmates. Working alongside student leaders and soliciting the involvement of as many other students as possible, Dr. Page has helped to identify areas that students want to address within the school. These efforts have led to professional development offerings on topics such as equity and diversity, as well as differentiated instruction based on student classmates. Several years ago, he co-founded and chaired Douglas County School District’s first-ever Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility Committee. The Committee dug into district data and policies and produced recommendations for increasing equitable practices and training, diversity in thoughts and actions, and inclusion and accessibility for all learners. Out of this work the district’s first equity policy, which represented input and involvement from over 3,000 stakeholders across Douglas County School District, Dr. Page was the co-chair for the project.

His leadership in this area is noticed and deeply appreciated by students, staff and families. Said one parent, “Dr. Page sits on more committees than I can say so that he can be a voice for those that don’t have one. He has taught me that equity isn’t just a policy, it’s embedded in every minute of our day.”

When notified that Dr. Page was selected for this award, he shared, “When I found out I was selected for High School Principal of the Year, I had an overwhelming joy in my heart. I am so proud to be the principal of Highlands Ranch High School, and this recognition is an acknowledgment of all the amazing accomplishments our students, staff, and community have been able to achieve over the years. There are so many amazing educators and leaders throughout the state of Colorado, and I am definitely humbled to be chosen for this recognition.”

“The culture at ‘THE Highlands Ranch High School’ as Dr. Page calls it, is a true family environment,” said Douglas County School District Superintendent Erin Kane. “He is incredibly committed to his students, staff, and families, and is someone we can count on, from the district level, to lend his voice to make our amazing school district an even better place to work and learn. Dr. Valdez is the principal of Mountain Vista Community School, and she was selected for this honor by the National Distinguished Principal Selection Committee through a competitive process.

With more than twenty years experience in public education, Dr. Valdez began her career as an elementary classroom bilingual teacher and also served as an assistant principal. She is extraordinarily passionate about student learning and growth, and cares equally as much about supporting her students, their families, and the school staff in ways that ensure they feel valued and part of a community. Dr. Valdez is routinely described as a leader who is first and foremost an advocate for kids, with an unwavering commitment to keeping their best interests at the center of every decision.

The student demographics of Mountain Vista Community School are diverse. 80% are students of color, 68% of students qualify for free-and-reduced lunch, 10% are English Language Learners, and 17% qualify for special education services. As Harrison School District 2 Superintendent Dr. Wendy Birhanzel shared, Dr. Valdez is committed to helping every student beat the odds and outperform their peers across the state, and she has fostered that value in a powerful way at Mountain Vista.

When Dr. Valdez began as principal of the school in 2018, the total school performance framework score was 62.1. After her first year, it jumped to 77.5--the second highest in the district. Her deep expertise in instruction helped inform her leadership approach to improving teaching and learning, and this work has been a multi-year and ongoing partnership with school staff focused on providing the best supports and instruction possible to all students. Teachers and staff worked collaboratively to backwards plan and deepen their understanding of the Common Core Standards, which they have then used to plan instruction, start with the end in mind when creating assessments, and plan more strategically and holistically than a week-by-week approach.

In her five years as principal at Mountain Vista Community School, Dr. Valdez has also helped to transform the school by instilling a stable and inclusive environment in which every student, family, and teacher or staff member feels valued. Survey data bears out the success of this priority: the school currently serves 20% of students who choice in from out of district; there is a waitlist of interested prospective students; 90% of students report that their teachers provide feedback and notice when they are struggling; and the staff retention rate is more than 80%.

“Angela fosters acceptance and inclusion for all students, and the climate of the school mirrors these expectations,” said Amy Lloyd, Harrison District 2 Director of Special Education. “She is a systems thinker, logical in her approach, and flexible in her thinking regarding what is best for students. She is a valuable asset to the district.”

Added Mountain Vista teacher Isabel Clamons, “Our school would not be as impactful for students were it not for Dr. Valdez. She mobilizes teachers to excellence by seeing us as individuals first. I have never had a school leader who is as knowledgeable about instruction, nor as empathetic to the teacher experience, in my fifteen-year career as she is.”

In addition to her positive relationships with staff, Dr. Valdez’s focus on culture has made a strong impact on parents and families. “Dr. Valdez is a skilled and experienced administrator who has a passion for students and parent success,” said Lorena Vedoy, parent of Mountain Vista student. “She is also highly skilled at maintaining positive communication and engagement with parents, and I truly feel 100% comfortable reaching out to her with any concerns regarding my child’s education, safety and wellbeing.”

Harrison School District 2 Superintendent, and 2023 Colorado Superintendent of the Year, Dr. Wendy Birhanzel shared that “Dr. Valdez has knowledge and perspective unlike most other principals I have worked with in my tenure in education. Her vision, dedication, and passion are making a long-lasting mark on students’ education and ensuring they will have choices in life. There is not anyone more deserving of this honor.”

Upon learning that she was selected as the 2023 Colorado Elementary Principal of the Year, Dr. Valdez shared with CASE, “When I found out that I was selected as a recipient of the Elementary Distinguished Principal Award for Colorado, I cried tears of pride for Mountain Vista Community School and Harrison School District 2. The award is not about me, it is about the unwavering commitment of our staff to ensure that ALL means ALL when it comes to D2 students. I am humbled and honored to be selected by CASE and NAESP.”

Dr. Valdez and other award honorees will be recognized this spring at the 2023 CASE Awards Reception.

###

The Colorado Association of School Executives (www.co-case.org) is the preeminent professional association for public school administrators in Colorado.
