Fair Tax Colorado - Initiative #271
August 3, 2020 Update: The Fair Tax Colorado Initiative did not get enough signatures to qualify for the November 2020 ballot. We lost too much time this spring due to the pandemic to gather signatures but this work remains a top and urgent priority for CASE. We badly need a fix to our public school funding system.
Overview: Why Does Colorado Need a Fair Tax?
- Colorado ranks last in the nation in teacher wage competitiveness, and we spend $2,800 less per student than the national average.
- Our roads desperately need updating, but a $9 billion project backlog means necessary road improvements are hard to fund.
- 1 in 5 Coloradans didn't get needed medical care because they couldn't afford it.
- Based on the cost to rent a two-bedroom apartment, Colorado is the 10th most unaffordable state in the country for housing.
How Does Initiative #271 Work?
By raising income tax rates for the top 5% of earners and lowering them for everyone else, Colorado will generate $2 billion in new revenue. Half of that will be dedicated to increasing pay for teachers and student support staff. The other half will go toward the impacts of a growing population and changing economy.
How Can I Get Involved?
CASE knows how busy you are, and even if you only have a bit of time to spare, it will really help the campaign. Below are three options for how you can get involved, ranging from the smallest time commitment (good) to the most impactful (best).
Good: Sign your name on a single line petition and have every registered voter in your household do the same. Then forward the single signer petition link to 15 friends, neighbors or colleagues and ask them to sign too. This is so quick and easy! You can download the single signer form here and either email or mail it back to the campaign.
Better: Collect 40 signatures so that you fill out a full petition. (If you live outside the Denver area, you can quickly sign up here to have petitions mailed to you. If you live near or in Denver, you can arrange to pick them up at the campaign office by emailing email@example.com.) Then forward petition information to 15 friends, neighbors or colleagues, and ask them to help collect signatures. Finally, watch this short presentation so that you understand what Initiative 271 would do and can talk with people about why it's so important.
Best: Fill up a full petition by collecting 40 signatures; then forward petition information to 15 friends, neighbors or colleagues and ask them to help get the word out about the campaign and to collect signatures. Consider organizing an event (that follows social distancing guidelines) or create a mobile signing station to get even more signatures - get information about how to do that here.
